    Mahogany kecapi, 'Elaborate Sound'

Ading designs this kecapi, a traditional Balinese zither that often lends its haunting melody to religious ensembles. The sound box is comprised of three tiers of mahogany glued together and finished with an outer layer of plywood. The kecapi extracts its melodious tunes from the frequency of the steel strings. Ading is a talented musician, which results in an instrument with sonorous tones and exceptional beauty.

"Ading is a short and simple name my parent gave me. My life is as simple as my name, but my life shouldn't be as short as it is. I was born on October 17, 1966 in West Java province. Playing traditional music is my hobby; I can play most of the traditional instruments. At one point I said to myself, 'Why can't I make those traditional instruments by my own hand?' Then I went about learning how to make them, and in 1991 I opened my own art shop. In 1999 I married a beautiful Javanese woman. She is very helpful in my work - she is the one who watches my art shop in the afternoon. She is also a good wife to me; she makes my work in the shop possible.

"In making various kinds of traditional musical instruments, I use mahogany wood, jackfruit wood, and bamboo. It needs patience and practice to get the right tone from each musical instrument. I'm very grateful for what Novica is doing in promoting my works to the whole world."

As so many others have said before me, my kalimba is beautiful, and the packaging was a lovely touch. I have carefully preserved it and turned it into a carrying case. Terima kasih !...
