Wood djembe drum, 'Making Music'

Waves flow and ebb, their gentle shapes lapping at the base of an extraordinary drum. Samuel Coleman creates a beautiful field of texture in warm tweneboa wood. Sculpted by hand, it adorns this remarkable djembe. The djembe drum originated in Benin, where it is used during voodoo rites, and has been introduced into neighboring countries; it has become indispensable in reggae. Coleman names this drum Mpitim, which means "Musical Organ" in the Akan language. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé cord can be slung over the shoulder.

"I was born on November 24, 1974. I stayed with my mother and started schooling at the Methodist primary school in town. I then moved to where my father stays, to be with him and to continue my education. I therefore studied at the Swedru School of Business where I took General Arts as a subject. While I was there, I was very much involved in the school's cultural troupe and performed with them. Upon completion of the Swedru School, I was a bit stranded with no money to further my education at the university level. Due to my interest in all things cultural things, I then decided to get involved in artworks, especially carving - drums to be specific. I moved back with my mother and then went under a three year training period, and now I am a master training three boys in the art of drum-making."
