Wood djembe drum, 'African Star'

In the Akan language, nsroma means "star," its warm glow sculpted on this djembe by Samuel Coleman. The drum originates in Benin, where it is used in traditional ceremonies and voodoo rituals. Coleman sculpts the drum from tweneboa wood, finished with mansion polish. The goatskin head is affixed by iron rings wrapped in cotton, and a macramé nylon cord can be slung over the shoulder.

"I was born on November 24, 1974. I stayed with my mother and started schooling at the Methodist primary school in town. I then moved to where my father stays, to be with him and to continue my education. I therefore studied at the Swedru School of Business where I took General Arts as a subject. While I was there, I was very much involved in the school's cultural troupe and performed with them. Upon completion of the Swedru School, I was a bit stranded with no money to further my education at the university level. Due to my interest in all things cultural things, I then decided to get involved in artworks, especially carving - drums to be specific. I moved back with my mother and then went under a three year training period, and now I am a master training three boys in the art of drum-making."
